This cyclist is over the hill thanks to his ebike

E-bikes are ubiquitous in Sitka. Tourists rent them, commuters ride them, officials field complaints about them. But one aspect of ebikes that is perhaps overlooked, is how they keep cyclists in the game as they age. 83-year-old Bill Hughes, the owner of the Yellow Jersey Cycle Shop, is a striking example.

Assembly conflicted out of hearing cell tower appeal

The Sitka Assembly was set to hear an appeal over a cell tower…until it didn’t. Too many assembly members had conflicts, so the group had to pass the appeal to a statewide board.

City to keep Lincoln Street open through June

The Sitka Assembly is leaving Lincoln Street open for at least another month. When the assembly met on Thursday (5-29-25), the group agreed that more time was needed before making a decision on whether to bring back street closures on days with high cruise traffic. 

Sitka Music Festival to open with a rare mix of flute and strings

Festival artists Ilya Finkelshteyn, Evin Blomberg, Christian Colberg, and Amy Taylor (two couples all from Cincinnati) share their love stories, and how they've made lives together in music. During concerts this Friday and Saturday (June 5, 6) they'll be performing works by JC Bach, Johannes Brahms, and Ludvig van Beethoven.
